Keontae Barnes had another huge night for Orchard View with his third 40+ point game on the season. The other two came against Newaygo and Belding.
The Cardinals were shorthanded, with only 6 players suiting up due to suspensions from the fight during their game against Muskegon Heights on Friday. It showed early, as Shelby built a 9-2 lead in the first two minutes of the game, but that lead was quickly erased as the Cardinals went on a 20-2 run to end the first quarter.
The rest of the game was all OV. They took a 37-23 lead into halftime and outscored the Tigers 22-2 in the third quarter to go up 59-25. In the final period, OV again outscored Shelby and won by a final score of 73-32.
When asked about what it meant to see the guys playing rise up to the occasion despite low numbers tonight, Orchard View coach Nick Bronsema said “It was really big, the next men literally stood up.”
Bronsema also has a lot of respect for Shelby coach Rick Zoulek, who is in his 35th season as the Tigers head coach. “You walk into their gym and you automatically have respect, because banners are everywhere…the respectfulness he instills in each of his players is second to none.”
Leading scorers for Orchard View were Keontae Barnes with 43 points and John Tunstull with 9. Logan Claeys led Shelby with 11 points.
The win brings Orchard View to 9-4 on the season and drops Shelby to 1-12.
